Billing

How billing, payment methods, and setup limits work in owntag.

Billing is per organization

Billing in owntag is managed at the organization level, not per user. Each organization has its own billing setup, payment methods, and invoices. This means all setups within an organization share the same billing account, regardless of which member created them.

Setting up billing

To activate billing for your organization, go to Organization Settings → Billing and add a payment method. Once a valid payment method is on file, your organization can create production setups.

Only members with the Admin or Owner role can access and manage billing settings.

Test setups vs. production setups

owntag distinguishes between two types of setups:

  • Test setups are free and designed for evaluating the product. Each organization can create up to 2 test setups without billing. Test setups are fully functional and let you explore all of owntag’s features.
  • Production setups require active billing on the organization. There is no limit on the number of production setups — you can create as many as you need.

Setup limits at a glance

Billing statusTest setupsProduction setups
No billingUp to 2Not available
Active billingUp to 2Unlimited

If your organization has no billing and has already created 2 test setups, you will need to add a payment method before creating additional setups.

Payment methods, invoices, and billing address

You can manage your payment method, view invoices, and update your billing address in Organization Settings → Billing. owntag uses Stripe for payment processing.

What happens when billing lapses

If your organization’s billing lapses — for example because a payment method is removed or a payment fails — your existing setups continue to run without interruption. No setups are suspended or deleted.

However, the organization will not be able to create new production setups until billing is restored. Test setups (up to the limit of 2) can still be created.

Who can manage billing

Billing can be managed by members with the Admin or Owner role. Members with the Member role cannot access billing settings.
